Preventive Detention Under PIT NDPS Act

Continuing its intensified crackdown on drug trafficking, the Himachal Pradesh Police has taken further stringent action under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. In the last fortnight, multiple habitual offenders have been detained under the Act, and financial investigations are underway to freeze and forfeit their illegally acquired properties.

In a recent development, Guddu Ram, son of Mast Ram, resident of Luhri, Tehsil Anni, District Kullu, has been preventively detained for his repeated involvement in illicit drug trafficking. Despite having three cases registered against him under the NDPS Act for possession and trafficking of heroin (chitta), he continued his unlawful activities. A proposal for his detention was forwarded by District Police Kullu to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Himachal Pradesh Government, and upon approval, he was lodged in District Jail Kullu for three months on 30.03.2025 to prevent further drug-related offenses.

Similarly, Mani Ram, son of Nok Singh, resident of Thraimbla, Tehsil Banjar, District Kullu, has also been preventively detained under the PIT NDPS Act. With three NDPS cases registered against him, involving the recovery of cannabis and heroin (chitta), Mani Ram was actively engaged in drug trafficking despite previous arrests. On the recommendation of District Police Kullu, the Detaining Authority approved his preventive detention, and he was taken into custody at District Jail Kullu on 31.03.2025 for a period of three months.

With these two recent detentions, Himachal Pradesh Police has now preventively detained a total of fifteen individuals under the PIT NDPS Act to date. In addition to these actions, financial investigations are being conducted against all individuals detained under the Act, which will lead to the freezing and subsequent forfeiture of their properties acquired through illicit drug trafficking.
